# B2B Influencer Marketing: How to Pick Creators by ICP Reach, Not Follower Count

> B2B influencer marketing is a partnership between a business brand and creators its buyers already listen to, used for credibility, niche reach and, over time, pipeline. Yes, it works in B2B when the creator's active audience overlaps your ideal customer profile, the partnership runs as long as your buying cycle, and you measure beyond likes. You can measure that overlap before signing: import the people who reacted to a creator's recent posts, enrich them, and count how many pass your ICP filter.

## What is B2B influencer marketing?

**B2B influencer marketing is a partnership between a business brand and people its buyers already listen to (practitioners, experts, LinkedIn creators, newsletter and podcast hosts, analysts) to carry a message or a piece of content to an audience the brand cannot reach as credibly on its own.** It serves three goals: credibility with a niche audience, reach inside that niche, and, over a longer cycle, pipeline.

One clarification before going further. In sales, "the influencer" is also a role in the buying committee: the person who shapes a decision without signing it. That role is covered in our guide to the [B2B buyer persona](https://derrick-app.com/b2b-marketing/b2b-buyer-persona). This guide is about outside creators a brand works with.

Most pages that rank for B2B influencer marketing agree that engagement and audience overlap matter more than follower count; few show how to put a number on audience overlap before a contract is signed. This guide gives that method. You will find who B2B influencers are, how to find them, a four-step method to qualify a creator by the share of your ideal customers in their active audience, a worked example, a calculator, and how to pay and measure the partnership.

## Does influencer marketing work for B2B?

B2B influencer marketing works under three conditions, and fails when any of them is missing.

1. **The creator's active audience overlaps your ideal customer profile.** Not their followers: the people who react and comment. Engagement rate alone does not settle it either, because a high rate among the wrong people is still the wrong audience. A creator with a large following of students and job seekers will not move a purchase decision at a mid-size software company.
2. **The partnership lasts as long as your buying cycle.** B2B purchases involve several people and take months. A single sponsored post is a test, not a program.
3. **You measure beyond likes.** Impressions and reactions tell you the post was seen. What you need to know is who saw it: how many people in your target roles, in how many of your target accounts, and what happened to those accounts afterwards.

When B2B influencer marketing disappoints, it is usually because the brand bought reach and measured reach. The rest of this guide is about buying and measuring the right audience instead.

## B2B vs B2C influencer marketing

B2B influencer marketing borrows the mechanics of consumer campaigns, but almost every variable changes.

| | B2B influencer marketing | B2C influencer marketing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who the influencer is | A practitioner or expert in the buyer's field | A personality with a broad following |
| Content | Educational: methods, opinions, teardowns, comparisons | Lifestyle and entertainment |
| Main channels | LinkedIn, newsletters, podcasts, webinars, YouTube | Instagram, TikTok, YouTube |
| Decision | A buying group of several people, over months | One person, often on impulse |
| Partnership | Long, always-on relationships | Campaigns, often one-off |

Influencers and creators are often used as synonyms, but they are not quite the same. An influencer brings authority: people trust their judgment on the subject. A creator brings craft: they know how to make a format work. B2B creators suit awareness and consideration, where a good format earns attention. Influencers with real expertise suit complex purchases, where a buying committee needs someone credible to vouch for an approach.

## Who are B2B influencers? Segment creators by motion

"B2B marketing influencers" covers very different people. Grouping them by what they do for a buyer, their motion, is more useful than grouping them by follower count, because each motion is measured differently.

| Motion | Who | What they do for your buyer | What you can measure before signing |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Educators and practitioners | People who do the job and teach it on LinkedIn or YouTube | Show how a method works in practice | Engagers of their recent LinkedIn posts: who they are, which companies |
| Reviewers and comparison creators | People who test and compare tools | Help buyers shortlist | Engagers of their posts; comments asking for advice |
| Newsletter, podcast and community hosts | People who own a list or a room | Reach an audience by email or audio | Little in public: ask for an audience breakdown, or run a short paid test |
| Niche LinkedIn creators | People with a strong voice in one field | Put a topic in front of a specific role | Engagers of their recent posts, the most measurable case |

Two further groups matter: your own employees, covered in part 10, and the leaders of your customers, who are often the most credible voices of all. For B2B tech influencers, the same grid applies; the motion matters more than the industry label. Be honest about the limit: the method in part 06 measures LinkedIn audiences well, because reactions and comments are public. A podcast audience does not leave that trace.

## How to find B2B influencers your buyers already follow

A ranked list of "top B2B influencers" tells you who is popular, not who your buyers listen to. Build the shortlist from your own data instead.

- **Your own posts.** Look at who comments on your company's and your founders' posts. Customers who post regularly are candidates.
- **Posts in your space.** On posts about your category, note the people your target roles reply to and tag.
- **Events and podcasts.** Speakers at your industry's conferences and guests of the podcasts your buyers listen to.
- **Your customers.** Ask them who they follow to stay current. Two or three names will repeat.

Whether you shortlist B2B creators or established experts, ten candidates are enough to start. The next step decides which of them actually reach your buyers.

## How to qualify a B2B influencer with data, not follower count

The question is simple: of the people who actually engage with this creator, how many are in your ideal customer profile? Four steps answer it.

### Step 1: write the ICP filter first

Write your [ideal customer profile](https://derrick-app.com/glossary/ideal-customer-profile) as a filter you can apply to a person: job function, seniority, company size, industry, country. "Heads of sales and revenue operations at software companies of 50 to 1,000 employees in North America and Europe" is a filter. "Decision makers in tech" is not. If you need to build it from your won deals first, see our guide to the [ICP in sales](https://derrick-app.com/b2b-marketing/icp-in-sales).

### Step 2: log followers and connections

Record each creator's followers and connections. It is not the deciding number, but it is the denominator: you will compare ICP engagers per 1,000 followers across creators. In the Derrick web app, [LinkedIn Followers & Connections Count](https://derrick-app.com/features/linkedin-followers-connections-count) reads it from the profile URL, at 1 credit per profile, on the free and paid plans.

### Step 3: import the people who reacted to recent posts

Pick two or three recent, typical posts per creator (not the one viral outlier). Import the people who liked or commented on each. This is the creator's active audience, named. With [Import LinkedIn post likes and comments](https://derrick-app.com/features/import-post-engagers), you paste the post URL and get each engager's name and profile URL, at 1 credit per engager imported (only successful rows count). How a post's visible engagers relate to its impressions is explained in our guide to [LinkedIn impressions](https://derrick-app.com/linkedin/profile/linkedin-impressions).

### Step 4: enrich the engagers, then count

Remove the duplicates first: the same people react to several posts by one creator. Then enrich each unique engager with [Enrich Leads](https://derrick-app.com/features/enrich-leads) (1 credit per profile, free and paid plans), which returns their current title, company and the company's details. Apply the filter from step 1 and count. Two numbers come out, and together they are your measure of audience overlap: the share of the active audience that passes your ICP filter, and the number of ICP engagers per post. Then a third, if you run account-based marketing: how many of your target accounts have at least one employee among the engagers. How to build and work that account list is covered in our guide to [LinkedIn ABM](https://derrick-app.com/b2b-marketing/linkedin-abm).

The three features read LinkedIn, so they need your LinkedIn account connected through the Derrick Chrome extension, on every surface.

| Criterion | How to measure it | Working rule (ours, not a market benchmark) | Where the data comes from |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Real expertise | Has the person done the job your buyer does? | Yes, or a clear reason they are trusted anyway | Their profile and experience |
| Regularity | Posts per month over the last quarter | Steady over several months | Their activity feed |
| Engagers per post | Reactions and comments on 2 to 3 typical posts | Compare across creators, not to a fixed number | Imported engagers |
| ICP share of engagers | Engagers passing your filter ÷ unique engagers | The higher, the better; rank creators on it | Enriched engagers |
| ICP engagers per post | Engagers × ICP share | The number you are paying for | Calculated |
| Comments vs likes | Share of comments among reactions | Comments weigh more than likes | Imported engagers |
| Target accounts reached | Target accounts with an employee among the engagers | Any number above zero is a lead for your ABM team | Enriched engagers matched to your account list |
| Brand fit | Tone, opinions, past partnerships | A human read, never a score | Their posts |

Watch for fake engagement. Engagement pods leave a pattern: the same thirty people under every post, many of them outside your ICP and outside the creator's country, reacting within minutes. When the same names repeat across all audited posts and almost none passes your filter, the engagement is real but the audience is not yours.

## Follower count vs ICP engagers: a worked example

The two creators below are fictional, and the numbers are illustrative. They show why follower count is the wrong way to rank B2B influencers.

| | Creator A | Creator B |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Followers | 85,000 | 12,000 |
| Engagers per post (average of 3 posts) | 240 | 110 |
| Share of engagers in your ICP | 9% | 41% |
| ICP engagers per post | about 22 | about 45 |
| ICP engagers per 1,000 followers | about 0.25 | about 3.8 |

Creator A has seven times the followers and reaches half as many of your buyers per post. If both ask a similar fee, B is the better partnership by a wide margin; if A asks more, the gap widens. None of this shows on a follower count.

The audit itself has a cost, counted by steps. For a shortlist of 10 creators, 3 posts each at around 120 engagers per post: one credit per creator for the follower counts, then 3,600 engager rows imported at 1 credit each, then the unique engagers enriched at 1 credit each. With a working assumption of 30% duplicates across one creator's posts, that leaves about 2,520 profiles to enrich. The whole audit lands a little above 6,000, which needs the Standard plan (20 euros a month, 10,000 credits). The free plan (100 credits a month, no card) covers the follower counts of a shortlist and a small test post, not a full audit. Use the calculator to size your own.

### How many of your buyers does this creator reach?

Enter one creator's numbers, then the size of your shortlist to cost the audit. The result updates as you type.

Enter the creator's followers and engagers.

Estimate only: it assumes every creator on the shortlist has about the same engagement as this one. The duplicate share is a working assumption; your own import will show the real figure. Import LinkedIn post likes and comments, Enrich Leads and LinkedIn Followers & Connections Count read LinkedIn and need your LinkedIn account connected through the Derrick Chrome extension.

## B2B influencer marketing costs: how to pay creators

In B2B influencer marketing, four payment models are common, and many partnerships mix two of them.

- **Flat fee** per post, per series or per month. Simple, and the right choice for a first test.
- **Performance**: a commission per qualified lead, per demo or as a share of revenue. Fair in theory, hard in practice, because B2B attribution is slow and shared.
- **Hybrid**: a smaller flat fee plus a bonus on an agreed result. Often the most workable for an always-on program.
- **Product, equity or advisory roles**: common with early-stage companies and with practitioners who use the product anyway.

Whatever the model, put four things in the contract: the deliverables and their schedule, who can reuse the content and for how long (including after the partnership ends), any category exclusivity, and how the creator discloses the partnership. Start small, with one or two posts, and grow the partners whose ICP numbers hold. We do not publish fee ranges: the ones circulating online are not sourced, and fees depend on the niche far more than on follower count.

### Formats that work in B2B

- A post co-written with the creator, in their voice, on a problem your product solves.
- Thought Leader Ads on LinkedIn: sponsoring the creator's own post so it reaches your targeting.
- A co-hosted webinar or live session.
- A podcast episode or a sponsored newsletter issue.
- An honest comparison or teardown, where the creator keeps editorial freedom.

## How to measure B2B influencer marketing without vanity metrics

| Goal | KPI | How to track it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reach the right people | ICP engagers on the sponsored post; target accounts reached | Import the post's engagers, enrich them, apply the ICP filter, match companies to your account list |
| Traffic and interest | Visits and sign-ups from the creator's links | UTM parameters and a dedicated landing page |
| Attribution the tools miss | Mentions of the creator in "how did you hear about us" | A free-text field on demo and sign-up forms |
| Pipeline | Meetings and opportunities in the reached accounts | Follow the named accounts in your CRM over 3 to 6 months |

The first line changes how B2B influencer marketing is reported. Instead of "40,000 impressions", the report reads, for example, "63 people in our ICP engaged, 11 of them in target accounts" (illustrative figures). Those accounts become a list your sales team can work, and a list you can watch in the CRM for the following months. Leading indicators (engagers, traffic) move in weeks; pipeline moves over a B2B buying cycle, so judge a partnership on at least a quarter.

**One email every 2 weeks.** Fill Down covers go-to-market and sales data tactics, including how to turn LinkedIn engagement into account lists your sales team can work. [Subscribe to the Fill Down newsletter →](https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/fill-down-gtm-sales-news-7480639838598184961/)

## Build your own B2B influencers: employee advocacy

Your employees are the B2B influencers you do not have to recruit. Founders, sales leaders and subject experts who post regularly reach people a brand page rarely reaches. The same measurement applies: import the engagers of their posts, enrich them, and count the ICP share. It tells you which internal voices reach buyers, and which mostly reach peers and recruiters. How sales reps engage prospects on LinkedIn is covered in our guide to [social selling tools](https://derrick-app.com/b2b-marketing/social-selling-tools); posting as a prospecting channel, and why it is a slow one, is covered in our guide to [LinkedIn prospecting](https://derrick-app.com/b2b-marketing/linkedin-prospecting).

### Common B2B influencer marketing mistakes

1. **Buying reach outside your ICP.** A frequent B2B influencer marketing failure, and the one audience overlap measurement prevents. A large following you cannot sell to is an expensive way to be seen.
2. **Over-controlling the content.** A post that sounds like your brand loses the reason you hired the creator.
3. **Judging at 30 days a cycle that takes six months.**
4. **Depending on one person.** Work with several creators, so one change of job or tone does not stop the program.
5. **Ignoring engagement pods.** Check who the engagers are before you pay for them.

## Run a B2B influencer marketing shortlist check in the Derrick app

The whole qualification step of a B2B influencer marketing program runs in the Derrick web app, with nothing to install apart from the Chrome extension that connects your LinkedIn account.

1. Paste each creator's profile URL and add a LinkedIn Followers & Connections Count column (1 credit per profile).
2. Paste the URLs of two or three recent posts per creator and import their likes and comments with [Import LinkedIn post likes and comments](https://derrick-app.com/features/import-post-engagers) (1 credit per engager imported).
3. Remove duplicate engagers, then add an Enrich Leads column (1 credit per profile) to get title, company and company size.
4. Filter on your ICP, count per creator, and match companies against your target account list.

If your team prefers spreadsheets, the same actions run from the Derrick sidebar in Google Sheets. To check one creator in a conversation ("how many of the people who commented on this post are sales leaders?"), use Derrick in Claude or any MCP client. To audit every sponsored post automatically, call the REST API from your workflow. API and MCP access start with the Plus plan; on every surface, these actions need your LinkedIn account connected through the Derrick Chrome extension. The full list of actions and costs is on the [features page](https://derrick-app.com/features).

## Where to use Derrick: web app, Google Sheets, Claude (MCP) or API

The same B2B data enrichment is available on four surfaces. The free plan gives 100 credits a month, no card required.

- **Web app** (main entry, nothing to install): import or paste your list and enrich it in the browser. https://app.derrick-app.com
- **Google Sheets**: the sidebar add-on enriches your list in place, inside your spreadsheet. Install: https://workspace.google.com/marketplace/app/linkedin_email_phone_finder_ia_%E2%80%94_derrick/3746789989?flow_type=2
- **Claude / AI agents (MCP)**: connect the Derrick MCP server, then enrich from chat. Setup: /mcp
- **REST API**: call the same enrichment endpoints from your own stack (PLUS plan and up). Docs: https://app.derrick-app.com/api-docs

## FAQ

### What is B2B influencer marketing?
B2B influencer marketing is a partnership between a business brand and people its buyers already trust, such as practitioners, experts, LinkedIn creators, newsletter and podcast hosts or analysts, who carry a message or content to a niche audience. It aims at credibility, reach inside that niche and, over a longer cycle, pipeline.

### Does influencer marketing work for B2B?
Yes, under three conditions: the creator's active audience, the people who react and comment, overlaps your ideal customer profile; the partnership lasts as long as your buying cycle; and you measure who was reached, in roles and target accounts, rather than impressions. It disappoints when a brand buys reach and measures reach.

### How do I find B2B influencers in my industry?
Start from your own data rather than a ranked list: people who comment on your company's posts, customers who post regularly, voices your target roles reply to on posts about your category, conference speakers and podcast guests in your space. Then qualify each candidate by the share of your ICP among the people who engage with them.

### How do you measure a B2B influencer's audience before signing?
Write your ICP as a filter, log the creator's followers, import the people who liked or commented on two or three recent posts, remove duplicates, enrich them with title and company, and count how many pass the filter. Compare creators on ICP engagers per post and on the number of your target accounts reached, not on follower count.

### How much does B2B influencer marketing cost?
Fees depend on the niche and the format far more than on follower count, and the ranges circulating online are not sourced. Common models are a flat fee per post or month, a commission per lead or demo, a hybrid of both, or product and advisory arrangements. Start with one or two posts and grow the partners whose ICP numbers hold.

### How do you measure B2B influencer marketing ROI?
Track four layers: ICP engagers and target accounts reached by each sponsored post, traffic and sign-ups from UTM links, mentions of the creator in a how-did-you-hear-about-us field, and meetings and opportunities in the reached accounts in your CRM over three to six months.

### What is the difference between B2B and B2C influencer marketing?
B2B influencers are practitioners and experts rather than celebrities, the content is educational, the channels are LinkedIn, newsletters, podcasts and webinars, the decision belongs to a buying group over months, and partnerships run continuously rather than as one-off campaigns.
