# SaaS lead generation: start with the data you already have

> SaaS lead generation is the work of finding companies that could subscribe to your software and turning them into sales conversations or paying accounts. A software company already has three underused data sources: its signups, its integration ecosystem and its buying signals. Pick the rest of your channels by price per account, and measure accounts, not leads.

## SaaS lead generation: what is different

**SaaS lead generation is the work of finding companies that could subscribe to your software, and turning them into sales conversations or paying accounts.** It differs from other B2B lead generation in one important way: a software company already produces leads and data on its own. Free signups, trial accounts and integration partners tell you who is interested and what they use. Most SaaS teams spend their budget on new channels while those three sources sit half used.

This guide covers the three data sources first, because they are the cheapest leads you will ever get, then the channels by stage, then the numbers to watch. If you have a signup flow, the calculator in the next section shows how many of last month's signups deserved a sales touch.

| Source | What it tells you | What to do with it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Signups and trials | Who is already interested | Identify the company behind each business email, qualify, route the good ones to sales |
| Integration ecosystem | Who runs the tools you connect to | Target companies using those tools, with the integration as the reason to talk |
| Buying signals | Who is about to need you | Contact accounts hiring for the role you serve, or changing their stack |
| Classic channels | Who you can reach at scale | Content, outbound, partners, events, matched to your price point |

## Source 1: your own signups, the leads you already have

**For a product with a free plan or a trial, the best SaaS leads are already in your database.** Every signup with a work email points to a company. The problem is that a signup form gives you an email address and little else, so business signups get lost among students, freelancers and competitors testing the product, and sales never sees them.

The fix takes three steps. First, separate business emails from free email providers: the domain of "sarah@northwind.com" names a company, "sarah.k@gmail.com" does not. Second, turn that domain into a company record with industry, size and location. Third, compare it with your ideal customer profile and send only the accounts that fit to a salesperson, with the context attached.

  Signup calculator

### How many of your signups deserve a sales touch?

Three numbers from your own data. The result is an estimate of the accounts worth routing each month, and what identifying them costs.

Signups per month

    <input id="saasN" class="dpm__num" type="number" min="1" step="10" value="600" aria-label="Signups per month">

Share with a work email address (%)

    <input id="saasB" class="dpm__num" type="number" min="0" max="100" step="5" value="40" aria-label="Share of signups with a work email">

Share of those companies that match your ideal customer profile (%)

    <input id="saasF" class="dpm__num" type="number" min="0" max="100" step="5" value="25" aria-label="Share of companies matching your ICP">

Enter your numbers to see the result.

If you do not know your ICP match rate, enrich one month of signups and count. That number is worth more than any benchmark.

In Derrick, the chain runs from the Google Sheet where you export your signups, through the sidebar. **Find Names & Domains by Email Addresses** splits each address into first name, last name and domain, free and unlimited. **Search Companies** finds the company's LinkedIn page from the domain or the company name, and **Enrich Companies** fills in industry, headcount and location from it, at 1 credit per company each, on the free plan with your LinkedIn account connected. Once the chain is proven on a month of data, the REST API runs it on every new signup, straight into your CRM.

## Source 2: the integration ecosystem

**If your product integrates with other tools, the companies running those tools are your most qualified cold audience.** A SaaS that syncs with a particular CRM, e-commerce platform or help desk has a ready-made reason to write to every company using it: "you run X, we plug into it in two clicks, here is what that changes". That message is specific without any research on the individual.

Technographic targeting works in two directions. Outbound, you build a list of companies that use the tool you integrate with, and filter it by your usual criteria. Inbound, you publish one page per integration, because people search for "[tool] + [problem]" when they are looking for an add-on.

Derrick's **Website Technologies** reads the technologies a company runs on its website, at 2 credits per website, on the paid plans. Run it on a list of companies from your target market, filter the rows that show the tool you integrate with, and you have a segment with a built-in opener. It also works in reverse, to spot accounts that use a competitor of yours and might be open to a switch.

## Source 3: buying signals that come before a subscription

**In our experience, four signals most often come before a software purchase: hiring for the role your product serves, a new leader in that function, a funding round, and a change in the tech stack.** A company that hires three SDRs will need prospecting data. A company that just raised will buy tools for the team it is about to build. A new head of marketing reviews the marketing stack within the first months.

- **Hiring for the function you serve.** The strongest signal, because it is dated and tied to the user of your product. **Company Hiring Signal** shows which companies on your list are hiring on LinkedIn and for which roles, at 1 credit per company, on the free plan, with no account to connect.
- **New leader in the function.** New managers bring or change tools. Worth tracking on your best-fit accounts.
- **Funding.** New budget, new headcount, new tools. Most useful for SaaS sold to fast-growing companies.
- **Tech stack change.** A company that removes a tool is shopping for a replacement.

For continuous tracking rather than one-off checks, **Signal** watches your leads and accounts for job changes, funding rounds, hiring sprees and tech stack moves, and alerts you when one fires. It is available from the Standard plan at 20 euros a month, at 1 credit per signal that fires. The [guide to selling to decision makers](https://derrick-app.com/b2b-marketing/sell-to-decision-makers) covers how to open with the signal once you have it.

## B2B SaaS lead generation channels, by price point

**The right SaaS lead generation channel depends above all on your price per account.** A tool sold at a few hundred euros a year cannot pay for a salesperson's time on every lead, and a platform sold at six figures cannot rely on self-serve signups alone.

| Annual contract value | Main engine | Role of outbound | What the data work looks like |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Under 1,000 euros | Self-serve signups, SEO, integrations, marketplaces | Almost none, except partners | Enrich signups to spot the rare large account |
| 1,000 to 15,000 euros | Signups plus a sales-assist team | On product-qualified accounts and signals | Route fitting signups to sales within the day |
| 15,000 to 100,000 euros | Outbound and content, demos | Central, account by account | Build target account lists, map buying committees |
| Above 100,000 euros | Account-based programs, events, partners | Named accounts only | Deep research on a few hundred accounts |

These bands are orders of magnitude, not rules, and many companies run two engines side by side. The point is to pick channels your margin can pay for. The [inbound vs outbound comparison](https://derrick-app.com/b2b-marketing/inbound-vs-outbound) goes deeper on the trade-off, and the [lead generation tools guide](https://derrick-app.com/b2b-marketing/lead-generation-tools) compares the tool categories behind each engine.

## The content that converts for a SaaS company

SaaS buyers research alone for a long time. The content that turns that research into signups is rarely the generic blog post. Four formats consistently pull their weight:

- **Integration pages.** One page per tool you connect to, answering "can I use this with X, and what does it do". High intent, low competition.
- **Comparison and alternative pages.** People comparing tools are close to a decision. Be honest about who each option suits.
- **Free tools and templates.** A calculator, a checker or a template that solves a small part of the problem your product solves. It earns links and signups at the same time.
- **Use case pages by role or industry.** "[Product] for [role]" matches how buyers describe their own problem.

Each of these turns into a signup, which sends you back to source 1: identify the company, qualify, route. Content without the signup follow-up generates traffic, not pipeline.

## How to measure SaaS lead generation

Counting leads says little in SaaS, where a signup costs nothing. Measure the steps that lead to revenue, and measure them per account rather than per person.

| Metric | Definition | Why it matters |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Business signup rate | Signups with a work email, per 100 signups | Tells you whether acquisition reaches companies or individuals |
| ICP match rate | Business signups that fit your target, per 100 | The quality of your traffic, before any sales effort |
| Product-qualified accounts | Accounts that reached your activation milestone | The best predictor of a paid conversion in self-serve |
| Speed to first touch | Hours between a fitting signup and a sales contact | A fitting signup cools fast; hours matter |
| Pipeline per channel | Opportunity value created, by source | Compares channels on money, not volume |

Keep the stages consistent with your [sales pipeline stages](https://derrick-app.com/b2b-marketing/sales-pipeline-stages), so a signup, a qualified account and an opportunity mean the same thing to marketing and to sales.

## Mistakes that waste a SaaS team's leads

- **Treating all signups the same.** A student and a head of sales at a 500-person company get the same onboarding emails, and sales never hears about the second one.
- **Asking for everything in the signup form.** Company size, role and phone number on the form cut conversion. Ask for the email and enrich the rest.
- **Buying a list before using your own data.** Your signups and your integration ecosystem are better targeted than any list you can buy.
- **Spending on channels your price cannot support.** Outbound on a low-priced tool, or pure self-serve on an enterprise product.
- **Measuring leads instead of accounts.** Five people from one company is one opportunity.

## A SaaS lead generation setup, with the cost in credits

Here is a monthly setup for a SaaS with 600 signups, 40 percent of them on work emails. Splitting the 600 emails: free. Search Companies and Enrich Companies on the 240 business domains: 480 credits. Company Hiring Signal on the same 240 companies: 240 credits. Website Technologies on 200 target accounts to find users of the tools you integrate with: 400 credits. Total: 1,120 credits a month, within the 4,000 credits of the Mini plan at 9 euros a month when you run it from the Sheets sidebar. Automating it on every new signup through the API needs the Standard plan.

The same steps run on three surfaces. In **Google Sheets**, from the sidebar, on an export of your signups. From an **AI assistant** through the MCP server, in Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP client: "which of yesterday's signups work at a company with more than 200 people?". And through the **REST API**, triggered on every new signup so the CRM record arrives already enriched. The API and the MCP server are available from the Standard plan at 20 euros a month, and the setup works the same at 600 signups a month or 60,000.

## Use Derrick in Claude (MCP) or via API

Derrick isn't only a Google Sheets add-on. The same B2B data enrichment runs as an MCP server (use it directly inside Claude and other AI agents) and as a REST API:

- **Claude / AI agents (MCP)**: connect the Derrick MCP server, then enrich from chat. Setup: /mcp
- **REST API**: call the same enrichment endpoints from your own stack (PLUS plan and up). Docs: https://app1.derrick-app.com/api/v1/docs/

## FAQ

### What is SaaS lead generation?
It is the process of finding companies that could subscribe to a software product and turning them into sales conversations or paying accounts. It relies on signups and trials, the integration ecosystem, buying signals and classic channels such as content, outbound and partners.

### What is the best lead generation channel for a SaaS company?
It depends on the price per account. As an order of magnitude: below about 1,000 euros a year, self-serve signups, SEO and integrations carry the load. Between 1,000 and 15,000 euros, signups plus a sales-assist team on qualified accounts. Between roughly 15,000 and 100,000 euros, outbound and content with demos become central. Above that, account-based programs on named accounts take over.

### How do you qualify free signups in SaaS?
Separate work emails from free email providers, turn each business domain into a company record with industry, size and location, compare it with your ideal customer profile, and route the accounts that fit to sales with that context attached, ideally within the day.

### What is technographic targeting for SaaS?
It means targeting companies based on the technologies they use. A SaaS that integrates with a given tool can build a list of companies running that tool and write to them with the integration as the reason, or spot companies using a competing product.

### Which buying signals matter for selling software?
Hiring for the role your product serves, a new leader in that function, a funding round and a change in the tech stack. Hiring is the most practical because it is dated and tied to the future user of the product.

### How much does it cost to enrich SaaS signups with Derrick?
Splitting emails into name and domain is free and unlimited. Finding and enriching the company costs about 2 credits per work email (1 for Search Companies, 1 for Enrich Companies, with LinkedIn connected). For 240 business signups a month, that is 480 credits, within the Mini plan's 4,000 credits at 9 euros a month.
