The company was incorporated in Delaware in 1983 as SBC Communications, one of the regional holding companies spun off from the original AT&T on January 1, 1984; it took the AT&T Inc. name after merging with AT&T Corp. in 2005 and bought BellSouth in 2006. It sells wireless service under the AT&T, Cricket and AT&T PREPAID brands, fiber broadband through AT&T Fiber, fixed wireless through AT&T Internet Air, and network, ethernet and managed services through AT&T Business. In 2025 it reported revenue of 125.6 billion dollars and served 120 million Mobility subscribers, including 74 million postpaid phones. In 2026 it closed the purchase of Lumen's mass-markets fiber business and of EchoStar spectrum licenses, and agreed to sell its Mexico wireless unit. John Stankey has been chief executive since July 2020 and chairman since February 2025.
