It was founded in June 1922 by George J. Mecherle, a retired farmer, as an automobile insurer for farmers. Today it sells auto, home, renters, life, health and small business coverage through more than 19,200 agent offices, independent small businesses that carry the State Farm brand, alongside its app and website. The group services nearly 97 million policies and accounts and handles close to 11 million claims a year, about 30,000 a day. In 2025 it reported total revenue of 132.3 billion dollars, net income of 12.9 billion dollars and a net worth of 170 billion dollars, with more than 62,000 employees. Jon Farney has been president since January 2024 and chief executive officer since June 2024.
