# The LinkedIn industry list: 434 industries, 20 sectors, and their codes

> The LinkedIn industry list is the closed taxonomy that every profile and company Page selects its category from. The current version, V2, contains 434 active industries organised under 20 top-level sectors, each carrying a numeric code used as urn:li:industry:<id>. LinkedIn also still documents 53 retired industries from before its 2022 rebuild. This page reproduces the full list, sector by sector, with the codes and the parent branch of every entry.

The **LinkedIn industry list** is the closed taxonomy every LinkedIn profile and company Page picks its category from. The current version, called V2, holds **434 industries** arranged under **20 top-level sectors**, and each one carries a numeric code that LinkedIn uses internally as `urn:li:industry:<id>`. This page publishes the whole list, sector by sector, with those codes, plus the 53 retired entries that still turn up in older exports.

Two things make this list worth understanding rather than just scrolling. First, it is the only firmographic field on LinkedIn that is genuinely standardised, which is what makes it usable for segmentation. Second, the codes are not sequential and not stable across versions, so anything you build on top of them needs to key on the code and not the label.

## How the LinkedIn industry list is built: V2, sectors and codes

When a company creates a Page, or a member fills in their profile intro, LinkedIn does not offer a text box. It offers a dropdown, and everything in that dropdown comes from one taxonomy that LinkedIn maintains centrally. That taxonomy was rebuilt in 2022 to line up with the North American Industry Classification System, and the rebuilt version is what everyone now calls V2.

The structure is a tree, not a flat list. Counting the nodes by depth gives you the real shape of it:

| Depth | Nodes | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Level 1 (sector) | 20 | Technology, Information and Media |
| Level 2 | 145 | Technology, Information and Internet |
| Level 3 | 223 | Software Development |
| Level 4 | 40 | Mobile Computing Software Products |
| Level 5 | 5 | Blogs |
| Level 6 | 1 | Internet News |

The 434 nodes break down as 20 top-level sectors, 145 at level 2, 223 at level 3, 40 at level 4, 5 at level 5 and 1 at level 6. That single level 6 entry is `3124`, Internet News, five steps below Technology, Information and Media. It is the deepest branch in the entire taxonomy, and it is a useful reminder that "pick your industry" is a much bigger decision tree than the dropdown makes it look.

The sectors are also wildly uneven. Manufacturing alone accounts for 91 of the 434 entries, Professional Services for 42 and Technology, Information and Media for 41. At the other end, Holding Companies is a sector containing exactly one industry, itself. So a filter set at sector level does very different work depending on which sector you pick: "Manufacturing" sweeps up 91 possible values, "Holding Companies" sweeps up one.

One more structural detail that catches people out. The codes are historical, not ordered. `1` is Defense and Space Manufacturing, `4` is Software Development, `9` is Law Practice, while Accommodation Services is `2190` and the newest climate and accessibility categories sit up in the 3200s. Low code means old, not important. Sorting by code sorts by the order LinkedIn happened to create things.

## The complete LinkedIn industry list, all 434 by sector

One scoping note before the list. This page is the taxonomy itself, the reference you come to for a code or a branch. If what you actually want is how the same 434 values behave inside a Sales Navigator filter, where they are grouped into families and combined with OR rather than AND, that is covered separately in our guide to the [Sales Navigator industries list](https://derrick-app.com/linkedin/sales-navigator/sales-navigator-industries-list).

Below is the full taxonomy, grouped by its 20 top-level sectors. Each row gives the numeric code, the official English label, and the branch the entry sits under, so you can see the nesting rather than guess at it. Use the search box in the next section if you are hunting for one specific value.

These labels are the canonical ones. LinkedIn translates the display name into the member's interface language, but the code and the underlying English label do not change, which is why integrations should always store the code.

![Searching the LinkedIn industry list by name, by code or by sector](/illustrations/articles/industry-list/search-by-name-or-code.webp)The same search box answers three questions: by label, by numeric code, and by parent branch.

## Search the LinkedIn industry list by name or code

Type a few letters and the tables above filter down to matching industries. It searches the label, the code and the whole parent branch, so "software" surfaces every software node wherever it sits, and "3124" jumps straight to Internet News.

### LinkedIn industry code finder

Search the 434 V2 industries by name, by code, or by the sector they belong to.

    Search the taxonomy
    <input type="search" id="liFindIn" class="dpm__opt" style="min-width:min(100%,340px);text-align:left" placeholder="software, hospital, 3124, wholesale..." autocomplete="off">

Start typing to filter the 434 industries listed on this page.

Worth saying plainly: this finder searches the list, it does not tell you which category a given company chose. That value lives on the company Page itself, and the practical ways to get it are covered in our guide to [finding a company's industry on LinkedIn](https://derrick-app.com/linkedin/company-information/find-company-industry).

![Retired LinkedIn industries returning an empty segment count](/illustrations/articles/industry-list/retired-industries.webp)A pre 2022 value has no match in V2, so the filter returns nothing without raising an error.

## The 53 retired LinkedIn industries that still break imports

The 2022 rebuild did not just add categories, it withdrew some. LinkedIn still documents 53 inactive nodes, and they matter more than their small number suggests, because data collected before the migration can still carry them. If your CRM has records tagged "Information Technology and Services" or "Apparel and Fashion", they predate V2: neither label exists in the current taxonomy, and both were among the most heavily used values before the migration.

This is the failure mode to watch for. A filter written against the current list silently returns nothing for those older records, which reads like "no companies in this segment" rather than "your data is on the old vocabulary". Anyone maintaining an industry field across several years of imports should reconcile against this table before trusting a segment count.

![LinkedIn industry compared with NAICS, SIC and NAF classification codes](/illustrations/articles/industry-list/declared-vs-registered.webp)A LinkedIn industry is declared by the company. A registry code is assigned to the legal entity.

## LinkedIn industries versus NAICS, SIC and NAF codes

LinkedIn aligned V2 with NAICS, which is why so many of the labels read like statistical categories. Aligned is not the same as identical, though, and the gap that actually matters has nothing to do with the wording. It is about **who decides the value**.

| System | Who assigns the value | Values per company | Can it be wrong? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| LinkedIn industry (V2) | The company itself, when it sets up the Page | One | Yes, nothing audits it |
| NAICS | Self reported, used for statistics in the US, Canada and Mexico | One primary | Rarely challenged |
| SIC | Legacy US standard, still embedded in older databases | One primary | Often stale |
| NAF / APE (France) | Assigned by INSEE at company registration | One | Yes, but it is an official record |

Read that table again from a prospecting angle and the practical rule falls out. A LinkedIn industry is a *declaration*: a payroll software vendor may well sit under Software Development, and a consultancy of four people may well have picked Management Consulting Services because it sounded right in 2019. A NAF code is a *registration*: it is attached to the legal entity by the statistics institute, so it is far more consistent, and it is the level at which French company registries are actually searchable.

That is why the two lists work best together rather than as alternatives. LinkedIn gives you reach and current positioning, including companies too young or too small to be interesting in a registry. The French nomenclature gives you exhaustiveness and legal precision on the domestic market: 21 sections, 88 divisions and 732 sub-classes, all documented in our [full NAF code list](https://derrick-app.com/business-data/naf-code-list), with the reading rules in the guide to [what a NAF code is](https://derrick-app.com/business-data/naf-code).

A concrete way to use both: build the segment on NAF when you need every French company in an activity, and use the LinkedIn industry as a second filter to keep only the ones actually present and posting on the platform. One list is exhaustive, the other is alive. Very few teams run both, which is usually why their segments are either too broad or too small.

![Enriching a company list with its LinkedIn industry and code in Google Sheets](/illustrations/articles/industry-list/derrick-sidebar-industry.webp)Map the company URL column, pick Enrich Companies, and the industry and its code land row by row.

## Filtering and enriching companies by industry at scale

Knowing the list is step one. Getting the value for a few hundred companies is where it stops being a browsing exercise. Opening each Page and reading the About tab works for ten accounts and collapses at a hundred, which is the point most people reach about a week after deciding industry is their main segmentation axis.

There are three practical routes, and they suit different starting points:

- **You already have the company list.** [Enrich Companies](https://derrick-app.com/features/enrich-companies) takes your rows and returns the industry alongside the rest of the company record, at 1 credit per company, on the free and paid plans alike. This is the common case: a CRM export missing its firmographics.
- **You are starting from a description, not a list.** [Import Companies from a Prompt](https://derrick-app.com/features/import-companies-by-prompt) builds the list from a plain sentence describing the segment, at 1 credit per company, so you can go from "mid-size industrial equipment manufacturers in the Midwest" to actual rows.
- **You are working the French market.** [Import Companies by NAF Code](https://derrick-app.com/features/import-companies-by-naf) pulls companies straight from the activity code, at 1 credit per company, which is the registry-grade equivalent of an industry filter.

Two more that pair naturally with an industry segment: [Find Similar Companies](https://derrick-app.com/features/find-similar-companies) expands from accounts that already work, free to start and then 1 credit per matched company, and [Search Companies](https://derrick-app.com/features/search-companies) queries on criteria at 1 credit per company. All of this runs in the Google Sheets sidebar. The same operations also run through Derrick's API, and through its MCP server when the question comes up inside an AI client rather than in a spreadsheet: "what industry is this company in" gets answered without opening a sheet.

Once the industry is in the sheet, the follow-on columns are the ones that make a segment actionable: [company size](https://derrick-app.com/linkedin/company-information/company-size) to split enterprise from SMB, [the company description](https://derrick-app.com/linkedin/company-information/find-company-description) for the positioning the category flattens, and [the employee list](https://derrick-app.com/linkedin/company-information/find-employees) when you need people rather than accounts.

![How to pick a LinkedIn industry value and the limits of the field](/illustrations/articles/industry-list/picking-a-value.webp)Two rules that decide the choice, and the three limits the field carries whatever you pick.

## Picking a value, and what the industry list will not tell you

If you are choosing for your own Page, the useful question is not "which label describes us best" but "which label will the people looking for us filter on". Those are different, and the second one is the one that gets you found. A data enrichment vendor could defensibly sit under Software Development, IT Services and IT Consulting, or Technology, Information and Internet. The one to pick is whichever the buyers are selecting in their own filters.

Go as specific as the tree allows, too. A deep node still rolls up: anything under Software Development is caught by a filter set at Technology, Information and Media, so precision costs you no reach. Choosing a broad parent when a precise child exists does lose you the precise searches.

And the honest limits. One value per company means a business doing three things declares one of them. The value is self selected and rarely revisited, so a Page created in 2018 may still carry a category that describes a company that no longer exists in that form. Group-level Pages inherit a category that may not describe any single subsidiary. None of this makes the field useless, it just means the industry is a first cut, not a qualification. The description, the specialties and the headcount are what turn that cut into a segment worth working, and [looking at similar companies](https://derrick-app.com/linkedin/company-information/similar-companies) is often faster than refining the category filter.

## Use Derrick in Claude (MCP) or via API

Derrick isn't only a Google Sheets add-on. The same B2B data enrichment runs as an MCP server (use it directly inside Claude and other AI agents) and as a REST API:

- **Claude / AI agents (MCP)**: connect the Derrick MCP server, then enrich from chat. Setup: /mcp
- **REST API**: call the same enrichment endpoints from your own stack (PLUS plan and up). Docs: https://app1.derrick-app.com/api/v1/docs/

## FAQ

### How many industries are on the LinkedIn industry list?
The current V2 taxonomy holds 434 active industries under 20 top-level sectors. LinkedIn also still documents 53 retired industries from before the 2022 rebuild, which brings the total number of documented values to 487. Only the 434 active ones appear in the dropdown today.

### Where does the official LinkedIn industry list come from?
LinkedIn publishes the taxonomy as reference tables for its API, where each industry carries a numeric id used as urn:li:industry:<id>. The list on this page is that taxonomy, reproduced in full with the codes and the parent branch for each entry.

### Which level of the LinkedIn industry list should I filter on?
As deep as your segment allows. The taxonomy rolls up, so a filter set on a level 1 sector such as Technology, Information and Media already catches everything beneath it, including Software Development and its children. Filtering on a broad parent when a precise child exists costs you precision without buying you any extra reach.

### How do I map a LinkedIn industry code onto a NAICS or NAF code?
By label, not by number. LinkedIn aligned the V2 wording with NAICS categories in 2022, so the labels are usually recognisable, but the numbering systems are unrelated: LinkedIn code 4 is Software Development and means nothing in NAICS. In France the mapping runs against NAF, whose 732 sub-classes are a finer grid than LinkedIn's 434 nodes, so one LinkedIn industry usually covers several NAF codes.

### Why do industry counts differ from one list to another?
Three reasons. Some lists predate the 2022 rebuild and describe the older taxonomy. Some count only the leaf nodes and drop the parent categories: exactly 101 of the 434 nodes are used as a parent somewhere in the tree, so a leaf-only count returns 333. And some include the 53 retired industries in the total. The figure for active nodes in the current V2 taxonomy is 434.

### What happens to companies that still use a retired industry?
Their Page shows a current category, because LinkedIn migrated the values. The problem is in data collected before the migration: a CRM record tagged with an old label such as Information Technology and Services will not match any filter written against the current list, so the segment silently returns nothing.

### Should I store the industry code or the industry label?
Store the code. LinkedIn translates the displayed label into the member's interface language, so the same industry reads differently depending on who is looking, while the numeric id stays stable. Keeping the label as a human readable column alongside the code is fine.

### How do I get the industry list as data rather than as a web page?
LinkedIn exposes the taxonomy as reference tables for its API, which is where the codes on this page come from. For the other direction, getting the industry of real companies rather than the list of possible values, use Derrick's Enrich Companies feature in the Google Sheets sidebar: it returns the industry alongside the rest of the company record at 1 credit per company, and the same operation is available through Derrick's API and its MCP server.
