Epic Games executive team overview
Epic Games has 6 tracked executives leading key functions including company strategy and operations, a key function, technology strategy and engineering (as of 2026-10-09). Epic Games is a privately held video game and real-time 3D technology company based in Cary, North Carolina. Tim Sweeney founded it in 1991 in Potomac, Maryland, as Potomac Computer Systems, and it moved to the Raleigh area in 1999. It runs Fortnite, develops Unreal Engine, which is licensed to game studios as well as film, television, architecture and automotive teams, and operates the Epic Games Store and the Epic Online Services toolkit. Sweeney still runs the company as chief executive officer and holds the largest stake, about 41 percent, ahead of Tencent at about 28 percent, The Walt Disney Company at about 9 percent after a 1.5 billion dollar investment in 2024, Sony at about 5 percent and KIRKBI, the LEGO family holding, at about 3 percent. Because it is private, Epic does not publish company revenue; outside estimates put it near 6 billion dollars for 2022. It does publish store figures: the Epic Games Store took 1.16 billion dollars of player spending in 2025 and counted nearly 972 million cross-platform accounts. In March 2026 Epic laid off about 1,000 people, roughly 20 percent of its staff, after a drop in Fortnite engagement, leaving about 4,000 employees, and in August 2026 it sold ArtStation and Sketchfab to KitBash3D to focus on Unreal Engine 6, Fortnite and the store.
