Benoit Dageville, Thierry Cruanes and Marcin Zukowski, three database architects, two of them from Oracle, founded the company in 2012 around the idea of separating storage from compute so that a data warehouse could run natively on public cloud infrastructure. That product line is now marketed as the AI Data Cloud and covers data warehousing, data lakes, data engineering, data science, application development and governed data sharing across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Fiscal 2026, which ended January 31, 2026, closed with total revenues of 4.68 billion dollars and product revenues of 4.47 billion dollars, up 29 percent, a net revenue retention rate of 125 percent and more than 13,900 customers, including 790 of the Forbes Global 2000. Sridhar Ramaswamy, who joined through the 2023 acquisition of his search startup Neeva and spent 15 years running advertising at Google, has been chief executive officer since February 2024. Frank Slootman, who led the company through its 2020 initial public offering, is chairman of the board.

Sridhar Ramaswamy is the chief executive officer of Snowflake, a role he took in February 2024.
