It was incorporated in 2013 by seven researchers from the AMPLab at the University of California, Berkeley who had built Apache Spark: Ali Ghodsi, Ion Stoica, Matei Zaharia, Patrick Wendell, Reynold Xin, Andy Konwinski and Arsalan Tavakoli-Shiraji. The company sells a unified Data Intelligence Platform that spans data engineering, data warehousing, streaming, governance, machine learning and generative AI, marketed through products including Agent Bricks, Lakeflow, Lakehouse, Lakebase and Unity Catalog. More than 20,000 organizations use it, among them adidas, AT&T, Bayer, Block, Mastercard, Rivian and Unilever, and the company states that over 60 percent of the Fortune 500 are customers. On August 13, 2026 Databricks announced that it had crossed a 7 billion dollar revenue run-rate with more than 80 percent year over year growth, alongside a 5 billion dollar strategic funding round led by Coatue at a 190 billion dollar valuation. Ali Ghodsi, one of the co-founders, has been chief executive officer since 2016, and fellow co-founder Ion Stoica serves as executive chair.

Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer
Ali Ghodsi is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Databricks. He is an Iranian-Swedish-American computer scientist and entrepreneur specialising in distributed systems, big data and data management, and he is also an adjunct professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He co-authored several influential systems papers, including the work behind Apache Mesos and Apache Spark SQL, and he was one of the seven Berkeley AMPLab researchers who incorporated Databricks in 2013 around Apache Spark. He took over as chief executive officer in 2016 and has led the company through its expansion from an Apache Spark service into a full data and AI platform used by more than 20,000 organisations.

David Conte, who goes by Dave, has been the chief financial officer of Databricks since October 2019 and leads the company's financial and operational functions. He spent the previous eight years as chief financial officer of Splunk, where he took the company public and helped grow it from roughly 100 million dollars in annual revenue to more than 2 billion dollars. Before Splunk he was chief financial officer of Opsware, the IT automation software company acquired by Hewlett-Packard for 1.65 billion dollars. Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer
Matei Zaharia is a co-founder and the chief technology officer of Databricks. He is a Romanian-Canadian computer scientist and educator, and he is the creator of Apache Spark, the distributed processing engine he started as a doctoral project at the AMPLab of the University of California, Berkeley and that was donated to the Apache Software Foundation in 2013. That project is the technical origin of Databricks, which he founded the same year with six other Berkeley researchers. He also started the MLflow machine learning lifecycle project, and he combines his role at the company with academic work in computer science.

Ion Stoica is a co-founder of Databricks and serves as its executive chair. He is a Romanian-American computer scientist specialising in distributed systems, cloud computing and computer networking, a professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley and a co-director of the AMPLab where Apache Spark was built.
